US: construction sector is supported by private nonresidential output; residential output is generally weak.

Private residential output was up 0.5% m-o-m (-9.2% y-o-y) in April; building permits were down -1.4% m-o-m (-21% y-o-y).

Private non-residential output was up 2.4% m-o-m (31% y-o-y); Architecture Billings Index (ABI) was down to 48.5 in April from 50.4 in March (<50, contraction).

China: post-pandemic bounce-back weaker than anticipated; state banks continue cutting lending rates; infrastructure output growing.

The 3-month moving average y-o-y growth in floor space started fell -24% in April; floor space sold was down -6% y-o-y. Infrastructure spending in rail, road, and civil is up 14%, 6%, and 4%, respectively, on a year-to-date basis, year on year.

Eurozone: leading indicators remain weak despite signs of slowing input cost inflation.

Eurozone construction was down -1.5% y-o-y in March, making this the largest decline in output since August 2021. The decline was driven by buildings (-1.3% y-o-y) and civil works (-2.2% y-o-y).

The IHS Markit Eurozone Construction PMI declined to 44.6 in May from 45.2 in April (< 50, contraction).

India: core index of infrastructure industries slows to 6-month low in April.

The weighted average of eight core industries’ output was up 3.5% y-o-y in April; production of steel was up 12%, and cement was up 11.6% y-o-y.
