Park 1538 in Gwangyang – a steel landmark bridging industry, city, and community

Park1538 Gwangyang is a public cultural and educational complex that combines an open urban park with a promotion center and an education center. The project is conceived around the concept of “Furnace of Light”, referencing the 1,538°C melting point of iron and symbolising the transformation of steel from raw material to finished product. The site is fully open to the public and integrates exhibition, learning, and leisure functions, strengthening the connection between industry, city, and community.

The architectural concept, “Light Wave”, draws on the meaning of Gwangyang as “light” and “sun” and translates this into a continuous wave-like form. Steel’s structural strength and geometric flexibility enable the complex curved surfaces, large cantilevers, and open floor plates required for exhibitions, galleries, and multipurpose spaces. The buildings are organised to clearly separate public, educational, and business functions while maintaining visual and spatial continuity across the site.

Steel is the primary structural and architectural material throughout the project. All buildings use a steel frame structure based on POSCO SS275 and SM355 built-up members. Approximately 4,400 tonnes of steel are used in the structure and envelope, including PosMAC steel for durability and corrosion resistance. A defining feature is the “rib” system, composed of 55 individually curved steel ribs combined with glass curtain walls, forming a layered spatial and structural system developed through advanced 3D modelling.

The complex also integrates art, landscape, and education through steel-based applications. Stainless steel artworks and reused steelmaking tools incorporated into the landscape reinforce the material’s functional and cultural role. Designed as a landmark and community asset in Gwangyang, Park1538 Gwangyang presents steel not only as a structural solution but as a central element in architecture, public space, and long-term urban value.

Excellence in Sustainability

St Marys Integrated Project Office

The St Marys Integrated Project Office (IPO) has been awarded constructsteel’s Excellence in Sustainability 2025 for redefining how temporary infrastructure can deliver long-term value. Designed to challenge the conventional disposability of short-term facilities, the project demonstrates how steel-led systems, early collaboration, and a clear reuse strategy can achieve strong sustainability and programme outcomes.

From the outset, the IPO was conceived for full disassembly and reassembly, with reuse planned across five lifecycles within a projected 50-year lifespan. Steel plays a central role in enabling this approach, providing the durability, precision, and adaptability required for repeated assembly without compromising structural performance. This reframing positions temporary infrastructure as a long-term asset rather than a single-use solution.

Circularity is embedded in the structural strategy through a hybrid system combining bolted structural steel with cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels. Mechanical connections enable clean disassembly, while early coordination aligned the structural grid with standard steel stock lengths. This optimisation saved approximately 10 tonnes of steel and reduced embodied carbon by 33.5 tCO₂-e, highlighting the impact of standardisation and material efficiency at the design stage.

Steel and prefabrication were also critical to construction efficiency and overall performance. The superstructure was erected in just 25 working days, supported by a prefabricated lift core installed in four hours, which improved safety and simplified sequencing. At cradle-to-gate, the project recorded a carbon footprint of 563 tCO₂-e, with projected savings of 2,534 tCO₂-e through reuse. Together, these outcomes demonstrate how circular, steel-based design can deliver adaptable, low-carbon infrastructure that remains valuable well beyond a single project lifecycle.

Winner: Walters Group & RJC Engineers

One Bloor West – Modular Composite Columns

One Bloor West is Canada’s first supertall building, rising more than 300 metres on a highly constrained, transit-oriented site in downtown Toronto. The mixed-use tower required a large, column-free retail base and a highly efficient structural system—challenges that could not be met with conventional concrete construction alone.

Steel plays a defining role at the podium, where large inclined steel mega struts transfer the tower loads above the retail levels onto composite mega columns at grade. This solution eliminates interior and corner columns, creating a clear-span retail space while allowing the main building core to be relocated above the podium, recovering usable floor area and reducing embodied carbon.

The composite mega columns combine high-strength steel sections, reinforcement, and high-performance concrete to achieve exceptional load capacity within a compact footprint. Compared to equivalent reinforced concrete columns, their reduced size increases leasable area at premium levels and improves material efficiency. Prefabricated steel nodes and components further enhanced constructability, safety, and programme control through off-site fabrication.

Steel also enabled key architectural and aerodynamic refinements, including hung corner columns and massing setbacks that reduce wind effects and structural demand. The slender steel base structure allowed existing heritage buildings on site to be retained during construction. Together, these innovations demonstrate how advanced steel and composite systems at One Bloor West enabled an efficient, flexible, and future-ready supertall building, setting a new benchmark for dense urban development in Canada.

Honourable mention

Narendra Modi Stadium, India

Redeveloped by Larsen & Toubro Construction on the site of the former Sardar Patel Stadium, the Narendra Modi Stadium demonstrates large-scale construction and structural coordination at an exceptional level. The project expanded capacity from 35,000 to 132,000 spectators through extensive use of precast concrete elements, long-span steel roof systems with a PTFE membrane, and integrated LED lighting, delivering unobstructed sightlines and efficient crowd circulation. Completed over five years, the stadium is the world’s largest cricket venue and the only green-rated cricket stadium in India, combining scale, constructability, and sustainability in a single integrated development.
