Exploring the ‘Crocodile Jaws’ composite bridge concept

Explore a new approach to steel–concrete composite bridge design featuring hybrid composite members—now formally included in the Eurocode (EN-1994-1-102). Developed through collaboration between researchers at Wrocław University of Science and Technology and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, this concept is being applied in Poland’s standardised bridge systems, including the world’s first network arch railway bridge in Cracow.

Project story

Calgary improves its flood defences with steel sheet pile

To protect residents and critical infrastructure from increasingly severe flooding, the City of Calgary is constructing a 2.4 km-long flood barrier incorporating steel sheet pile walls. Forming around half of the structure, the interlocking steel system provides durability and stability in densely built-up areas where space and excavation are limited. Embedded up to six metres underground, the sheet piles offer a permanent defence against future flood events while minimising disruption to surrounding infrastructure. The Sunnyside Flood Barrier is due for completion in spring 2026 — a clear example of how steel supports climate resilience and sustainable urban protection.

Humanoid robots in the construction industry: A future vision

The article “Humanoid robots in the construction industry: A future vision” highlights how humanoid robots could address the construction sector’s labor shortages and stagnant productivity. While automation has made some progress, humanoids – capable of diverse tasks in unstructured environments – offer transformative potential. However, large-scale deployment faces technological and operational challenges. The article urges construction leaders to prepare now, early action could position companies as industry leaders, ready to leverage humanoids to improve efficiency, safety, and project outcomes.
