Hotel with amenities and office in Madrid
Building use
Hotel
Country/Region
Spain
Overview
The building is part of a larger development than includes 3 other tall buildings. This is the only multi-purpose tower, with the need to accommodate an hotel with high-demanding standards such as a large conference center, amenities, etc. By an architectural point of view the circular shape that was originally sought was discarded because of an excessive window-to-core depth in the hotel spaces and a more triangular shape with rounded edges was adopted.
Basic information (construction date, number of stories, gross floor area, adopted design code, engineer(s), Contractor(s), etc.)
Construction date: 2004-2008
Number of stories: 58
Gross floor area: 14,425m2 below grade, 75,240m2 above grade
Adopted design code: Eurocode
Engineer(s): MC-2, Estudio de Ingeniería
Contractor(s): Sacyr
Issue and/or innovation
For the sake of construction efficiency and time reasons, there was the need to identify a quicker and more effective system to install the steel beams of the floor slabs on the columns.
Reason for composite solution
Specific solution/technical details
The steel profile embedded in the concrete columns varies from a HEM 160 to a HEM 300 S355 steel, further integrated by a plate of 260X155mm of thickness to which the bent plate that connects the beam is welded. The steel profile is encased in concrete that, depending on the level ranges from HA-70 to HA-45 and HA-30 and reinforcements from 32 to 25mm in diameter. The layout of the reinforcement bars is optimized so not to interfere with the beams entering the columns.
Impact or effectiveness
The identified composite solution to connect the beams to the columns is slightly more expensive than a conventional one with reinforced concrete supports with stronger concrete but proved to work very well with the specific flooring technology adopted.
