Overview

The new building to be constructed is located in Leeuwenhoek, in the middle of the Bio Science Park, the largest innovation area in the field of Life Sciences & Health in the Netherlands. A building consisting of three elongated buildings that are parallel to the original structure that has been demolished. The three buildings are connected by two atria that are entirely made of glass. The three separate buildings are divided into different parts that are slightly offset from each other. This gives the building scale and small cantilevers and setbacks create a building that is less static.

Issue and/or innovation

Composite columns are designed as steel profiles encased in lightweight concrete for fire protection.

Reason for composite solution

This solution proved to be cheaper than other types of fireproofing, not needing an architectural finish other than the bare concrete.

Specific solution/technical details

The composite column is provided by a HEM400 steel profile encased in a lightweight circular column with 550mm of diameter. The assembly does not develop a real composite action for the sake of the calculations as there are no shear studs nor confinement rebars for the concrete. Some columns use a smaller HEM 300 profile and the surrounding concrete is poured in a 450 mm diameter formwork.

Impact or effectiveness

Cheaper than other fireproofing solutions considered.
