Overview

The One Shelley Street building in Sydney was completed in 2010 and is best known for utilising an extremely efficient steel diagrid perimeter structure to eliminate the need for internal columns and to minimise the use of internal structural cores.

Basic information (construction date, number of stories, gross floor area, adopted design code, engineer(s), Contractor(s), etc.)

Construction date: 2010
Number of stories: 11
Gross floor area: 35,000m2
Adopted design code: AS1250/AS2327.1 (Standards Australia, 1998 and 2003)
Engineer(s): Arup
Contractor(s): Brookfield Multiplex

Issue and/or innovation

The external steel diagrid structure is used to resist the external gravity load of the entire structure and internal cores resist the remainder. Advanced fire engineering principles were used in the analysis and design of the structure.

Specific solution/technical details

The One Shelley Street building in Sydney was designed by Arup and built by Brookfield Multiplex on the foreshore of Sydney’s King Street Wharf and completed in 2010. The building is best known for utilising an extremely efficient steel diagrid perimeter structure to eliminate the need for internal columns and to minimise the use of internal structural cores. The diagrid members were formed from 310 UC sections and welded steel sections with 70 mm plate thicknesses of nominal yield stress, 450 MPa (N/mm2). The beams typically spanned up to 14 m at 3.2 m centres and used a 610 UB made composite with a 120 mm deep composite slab. Other innovative features in the design included a full fire assessment which enabled the use of 60 and 90 minute fire resistance limits (FRLs) in the commercial and retail areas, respectively.

Impact or effectiveness

One Shelley Street is an iconic building in Australia for steel and composite building design.
