Overview

The new congress venue of Oran is a steel-based project in a area of high seismicity. The restaurant here described is characterized by very long spans, unusually long for a single story building, needed for architectural reasons.

Basic information (construction date, number of stories, gross floor area, adopted design code, engineer(s), Contractor(s), etc.)

Construction date: 2007-2011
Number of stories: 1
Gross floor area: 2,600m2
Adopted design code: Eurocode3, 5, 8
Engineer(s): IDEAM S.A.
Contractor(s): OHL

Issue and/or innovation

The restaurant covered area measures 72x36meters. To keep the area as flexible as possible the clients wanted to have the minimum realistic number of pillars. The use of only 6 columns in the main area forced to use only two alignments of large mixed reinforced beams.

Reason for composite solution

With continuous spans of 18 meters in the main direction and 12 meters in the shorter direction, the beams have to work compositely with the concrete layer to minimize vibrations and reduce the structural ceiling height.

Specific solution/technical details

The main span of 18+18+18+18 meters is made with fabricated steel beams of 1 meter of height, that act compositely with the concrete slab. The secondary beams are done with HEB-400 Sections, also acting compositely by means of shear studs with the concrete slab above. A third order of beams with a spam of 6 meters and 3 meters apart one from the other completes the structural assembly of the floor. The composite floor is materialized by means of a ribbed sheet and reinforced upper slab, similar to that used in the rest of the buildings in the project.

Impact or effectiveness

The whole building where the described solution is adopted used about 7.900 t of structural steel, with span for normal floors up to 24m and an overall span of 60m in the main congress hall.
