Expert Q&A

Kim Dong Keun, CEO at POSCO A&C on Park1538 in Gwangyang

At Park1538, steel is both structure and narrative. In this expert Q&A, Kim Dong Keun, CEO of POSCO A&C, explains how the melting point of iron (1538 °C) informed a civic landmark defined by openness, transformation, and precision—using exposed steel ribs, expressive cantilevers, and the “Light Wave” concept to serve culture, learning, and community in Gwangyang.

Winner of the constructsteel 2025 Best Project of the Year Award.

Project story

Steel structures divert volcanic lava

How steel could protect people living near volcanoes

This project highlights innovative research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology exploring how steel structures could help protect communities near active volcanoes by diverting the flow of molten lava. Lightweight, modular steel prototypes have been designed, tested in the laboratory and deployed in southwest Iceland to assess their effectiveness in guiding lava away from populated areas. The work demonstrates how the strength, high-temperature resilience and rapid deployability of steel could support new approaches to volcanic hazard mitigation for vulnerable populations worldwide.

White paper: Decarbonisation of the Steel Industry

This white paper outlines how steel decarbonisation is being addressed today and in the medium term, with a focus on practical implications for the construction sector. Developed through the 2025 Sustainability Initiative Programme Partnership with the Council on Vertical Urbanism, it highlights measures already in use and realistic pathways for further progress, from reducing embodied carbon through EAF steel and circularity to emerging solutions such as hydrogen-based steelmaking and carbon capture.
