Complex building in Singapore (Funan)

Building use

Complex building

Country/Region

Singapore

Overview

Composite columns (concrete encased king post and concrete encased steel composite columns) were used to fulfil top-down construction requirements and load resistance requirements.

Basic information (construction date, number of stories, gross floor area, adopted design code, engineer(s), Contractor(s), etc.)

Construction date: 2016-2019
Number of stories: 12
Gross floor area: 87,000m2
Adopted design code: Eurocode & Performance based Singapore fire engineering code Engineer(s): RSP Architects Planners & Engineers (Pte) Ltd
Contractor(s): Woh Hup – Obayashi JV

Issue and/or innovation

Tight timeline and access being overcome with hybrid steel structure and precise planning and careful execution. Long span cantilever being overcome with steel beam pre-chamber up to 85mm upwards and back to flat upon DL in place.

Reason for composite solution

To fulfil top-down construction requirements
To fulfil load resistance requirements

Specific solution/technical details

Jet grouting treatment to improve the soil quality
Use bored pile with bigger diameter to minimize the clash with existing piles
Use composite column at basement and superstructure
Use hybrid system at superstructure
Use precast façade and planter to improve productivity

Impact or effectiveness

Long span cantilever to provide column-less office window view
Top-down methodology reduce construction timeline
VDC / ICE Coordination speed up design confirmation, reduced re-work and abortive works. Complete project 2 months ahead of contractual period
