Celebrating excellence in steel construction

In an exciting first for constructsteel, we are delighted to announce the inaugural constructsteel Awards winners. Following rigorous evaluation by our Global Advisory Committee (GAC), we present the standout projects:

Innovation of the Year: Australia – Quadshore: The lightweight propping solution for temporary construction

The invention was a joint project by Coates Hire, Monash University and Australian Steel Institute (ASI) fabricator member Knox Engineering at Ingleburn in Sydney. Quadshore is an innovative lightweight temporary prop for supporting buildings and structures during construction. Conventional propping systems, mainly made of low-grade steel, are usually heavy and hard to use. Quadshore’s revolutionary design uses lightweight, high-strength steel structural elements and boltless connections that render consumable sites more efficient and safer, while also reducing labour, handling, storage, and assembly/disassembly costs, saving construction companies both time and money.

 

Excellence in Sustainability: South Korea – POSCO Innovilt for the Zero Energy Villas


These three single-family homes, nestled within the Jack Nicklaus golf-course community, showcase innovative eco-conscious construction.
These eco-friendly structures utilise POSCO’s INNOVILT steel products, including steel structures, steel cladding (PosART), and high-performance insulation. They pioneer an energy-independent, sustainable model through solar photovoltaic systems and building energy management systems (BEMS).
Each villa possesses a unique character: the Gallery House, Green House, and Comfort House. Beyond their individuality, these villas inspire the community to embrace eco-friendly steel construction.
Key technologies, such as stone-like steel panels, high-resolution printed steel sheets, lightweight steel frames, BIPV roofing, superior insulation, triple-glazed windows, heat recovery ventilation, and smart home tech, aim for the highest Zero Energy Building (ZEB) certification.

Best Project of the Year: Japan – Taisei Corporation for the Japan National Stadium

The Japan National Stadium played a pivotal role in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics while serving as a regional disaster facility. Its construction efficiency shines through a simple yet robust structural design, featuring a 60-meter cantilever truss roof. Notably, this stadium is a remarkable steel-framed structure, an engineering feat. From a sustainability perspective, hybrid wood/steel materials for the roof truss and precast concrete for the foundation were employed. Seismic resilience is assured through the Soft-First-Story system, expertly balancing seismic performance with cost-effectiveness. This project, typically reserved for reinforced concrete, left an indelible mark in construction and engineering.
