Environmental assessment of roofing systems

Life Cycle Assessment

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study has been carried out to understand the environmental performance of different materials used in roofing systems. Using worldsteel’s buildLCA model, the study quantifies the life cycle environmental performance of six roof solutions for a typical Scandinavian single storey house – 150m2 roofing, used for 60 years – and identifies the solution with lowest environmental impacts.

Steel roofing solutions have a number of advantages over other materials

Lowest overall global warming potential

Lightest options and require less maintenance

Recyclability at end of life

Life Cycle Thinking

To understand the environmental performance of a product, its entire life cycle needs to be taken into consideration. A life cycle assessment (LCA) of a steel product looks at resources, energy and emissions, from the steel production stage to its end-of-life stage, including recycling.
