Infrastructure technologies: Challenges and solutions for smart mobility in urban areas

Traffic jams, long commutes, noise, and pollution have become a reality of the modern city life – with or without urban population growth, transport volumes will continue put pressure on urban space and infrastructure. Solving for urban mobility is a pressing and a complex challenge as it involves multiple transport modes and a diverse set of stakeholders from governments to city councils and service providers.

Digital technologies and infrastructure advances can address the issues that many cities face with options ranging across the Internet of Things (IoT), data analytics, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing to Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), urban congestion charging, and Mobility-as-a-Service (Maas) platforms. Implementing the technologies and innovations at scale, however, is a challenging task as there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Despite that, there are several successful examples globally stakeholders can learn from when it comes to designing or implementing an urban mobility system that leverages new technologies and an ecosystem approach.
