Refurbishing Europe: Igniting opportunities in the built environment

The built environment is a critical puzzle piece for both decarbonisation and the energy crisis. Refurbishing Europe’s buildings is essential for achieving the European Union’s energy efficiency goals. With a total renovation rate of just 12 percent annually, the current rate of refurbishment is not sufficient to meet the EU’s targets.

To close the gap, the EU is encouraging innovative solutions such as digital tools, performance contracts, and new financing models. These solutions are creating opportunities for governments, businesses, and citizens to make buildings more efficient and create jobs, at the same time protecting the environment.

By understanding the potential of refurbishment and engaging in forward-looking policymaking, governments, and the private sector can create a better future for all.
